Easy Ways to Use Grated Fresh or Ground Turmeric

  • Great in juices or smoothies
  • Add to scrambled eggs or egg salad
  • Add to simmering rice for beautiful color and flavor
  • Saute with greens such as collards or cabbage
  • Soup is even more warming when tinged with turmeric
  • Cut into slivers and use in coleslaw or salads
  • Add to stir-fries
  • Turmeric compliments any lentil dish
  • Make tea:  Add 1/2 tsp ground or 1 tsp fresh turmeric to 2 cups hot water and simmer for 10 minutes.  Add honey and lemon if desired.

       Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory.....Use with any oil, dairy product or black pepper to enhance this property.

Indira Yellow Turmeric

Indira Yellow is an Indian variety with a bright yellow interior and a nice assertive, earthy taste.  It is one of the main flavors in curries and masalas.

Hawaiian Red is milder and tastes like a very strong carrot.

 

White Mango Turmeric

White Mango has the taste of green mango.

 

  • Juices/Smoothies:  Add to any juice or smoothie.  This variety helps balance any bitterness from greens, especially kale.
  • White Mango Turmeric Pickles: Combine in a glass jar:  1 cup sliced white mango turmeric, 1 tbs. lime juice, 1-2 finely chopped green chiles and salt to taste.  Keep refrigerated and toss once a day.  Use after a few days as a garnish, on salads or for snacking.
  • Tropical Fruit Treat:  For a truly sublime taste treat, julienne white mango turmeric and combine with some shallot, mint and tropical fruits of your choosing.  Dress it with vinaigrette.

BKK Turmeric

Curcuma longa

This variety has small rhizomes about 1/3 the size of Hawaiian Red.  They are dark orange and very high in curcumins.  The flavor is strong and peppery.
